Espadrilles

Nothing evokes the feeling of summer in Spain like the espadrille. These humble jute soled shoes have a 4000 year old history with a more historical account dating back to the 13th century gracing the feet of both men and women. In the 1880s, they were worn by military, priests and mine workers becoming part of the popular culture. Traditionally, the lighter or white fabric was worn on Sundays and the black version was worn during the week. Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dali and JFK were spotted wearing their sporty chic espadrilles during seaside vacations. Finally, it was Yves Saint Laurent that gave them a wedge elevating them to runway must-haves in the 1960s and the rest, as they say, is fashion history.

Popular among the most fashion savvy of today, the stylish espadrille kicks off when the winter chill subsides and takes you through fall in casual elegance. Proenza Schouler has updated the classic with a bi-color sole and leather upper creating a cool off-duty vibe while Tory Burch has captured some of the romance of the 1940s as well as See by Chloe with an updated ankle strap. One pair just isn't enough to enjoy the thrill of the espadrille.
